South and Southwest Philadelphia

The Walt Whitman Bridge comes down in South Philadelphia, which makes the rowhome blocks from Queen Village and Pennsport down to Packer Park the shortest trip from our base. West of Broad, Point Breeze and Grays Ferry run into Southwest Philadelphia, where Kingsessing, Cobbs Creek, Elmwood and Eastwick sit between the Schuylkill and the city line.

The work across these neighborhoods looks alike in some ways and very different in others. Older rowhomes run on steam, hot water or a basement furnace, top floors overheat in summer, and condensers often sit on flat roofs. Girard Estate is a designated historic district, so exterior equipment there gets a little more planning.
