What we fix
Heat side, cool side, and everything around them
Most calls come down to one of two things: the house won't heat or it won't cool. Start there, or jump to the system you have.
Heat side
Heating

Gas furnaces, hot-water and steam boilers, radiators and baseboard. Older Philadelphia houses run on all of them, often with a few decades of patches in the basement.
Cool side
Cooling

Central air, compressors, coils and refrigerant leaks, plus high-velocity systems for houses that were never built for ducts.
Heat Pumps & Ductless
5 servicesHeat pumps that heat and cool from one outdoor unit, and wall units for rooms the main system never reaches.
Ducts & Indoor Air
8 servicesDuctwork, sealing, cleaning, zoning, thermostats, and the equipment that handles humidity and filtration.
Water Heaters & Home Repairs
10 servicesWater heaters, dryer vents, exhaust fans, gas lines, chimney liners, insulation, and the patching that follows.
Commercial
5 servicesRooftop units, walk-in coolers and boilers for restaurants, shops, offices and apartment buildings.
Where to start
What's going on at your place?
Pick the closest match. Each one opens the page for the repair that usually fixes it.
Radiators cold on the top floor
Steam that never reaches the third floor usually points to clogged or painted-over vents, or a boiler running at the wrong pressure.
Steam heat repairFurnace runs, house stays cold
A furnace that cycles but blows lukewarm air often has a dirty flame sensor, a failing ignitor or a filter so clogged the safety switch keeps tripping.
Furnace repairAC runs but the air is warm
Warm air from the vents while the outdoor unit hums is often a failed capacitor, a dirty condenser coil or a refrigerant problem.
AC repairIce on the copper line in summer
Frost on the suction line or the indoor coil means the system is low on refrigerant or starved for air. Switch it off so it can thaw before the drain overflows.
Refrigerant leak repairWater around the water heater
A puddle can be a relief valve doing its job, a loose fitting or a tank that has rusted through. The fix is very different for each one.
Water heater repairTop floor too hot to sleep
Rowhome third floors take the roof's heat all afternoon. A ductless head or a zoned system cools that room without freezing the rest of the house.

Old houses, hot summers, and a river between us
Heating and cooling work in Philadelphia starts with the age of the houses. Census figures reported by the Inquirer put most of the city's homes before 1950, and the basements show it: cast iron boilers, steam mains wrapped in old insulation, flues shared by two or three appliances, and ductwork added decades after the walls went up. We plan every repair around what is already there.
Summer is the other half. The city declared Heat Health Emergencies in June and July of 2024 and again in June 2025, and weeks like those are when a weak capacitor or a clogged coil finally quits. Top floors under flat roofs take the worst of it, which is why so many cooling visits end with a talk about a ductless head or zoning.
Jim's Repair Service works out of West Deptford, on the Gloucester County side of the Delaware. The Walt Whitman Bridge comes down in South Philadelphia, so South and Southwest Philly sit close to us, and so do Woodbury, Deptford, Cherry Hill and the rest of South Jersey.

What happens after you call
Five steps, the same at two in the afternoon or two in the morning.
- 1
A person answers
You talk to someone who asks what the system is doing, what kind of system it is if you know, and whether anyone at home is without heat or cooling.
- 2
We set the visit
We book the first open slot and tell you what to do in the meantime, like shutting off a leaking boiler or switching an iced AC to fan only.
- 3
Cause before parts
The tech tests before replacing anything: flame and ignition, pressures and temperatures, airflow, drains and wiring.
- 4
You choose the fix
We explain what failed and what the repair involves. Nothing gets replaced until you say go.
- 5
Run it, then clean up
We run the system through a full cycle, check gas equipment for safe venting, and leave the space the way we found it.

Basement mechanical rooms in older rowhomes are tight. Half of a good install is planning the way in and the way out.
How we work
How we approach a repair
Repair before replace
Most older systems have more life in them than a sales pitch suggests. When replacement does make sense, we show you why.
Old systems are normal here
Steam, gravity hot water, shared flues and plaster walls are part of the job in Philadelphia. We work with them instead of around them.
One call covers the house
The same visit can take in the furnace, the water heater beside it, the dryer vent and the patch where a new line went through.
Both sides of the river
We work in Philadelphia and across Gloucester, Camden and Burlington counties, so a Pennsport rowhome and a Cherry Hill split-level are both familiar ground.
Where we work
Philadelphia, its western suburbs and South Jersey
South and Southwest Philadelphia come first, then the Pennsylvania suburbs to the west and the South Jersey towns around our base.
Philadelphia neighborhoods
Rowhomes, twins and converted apartments from Queen Village down to Packer Park, and west through Kingsessing and Cobbs Creek.
Pennsylvania suburbs
Delaware and Montgomery counties, with Upper Darby, Haverford and Chester close to the city line.
South Jersey
Gloucester, Camden and Burlington counties, from Woodbury and Deptford out to Cherry Hill and Voorhees.

Why the Third Floor Stays Hot in a Philadelphia Rowhome
Flat roofs, one thermostat, and ducts that run out of air before they reach the top floor.

FAQ
Questions people ask before they call
Still not sure? Call and ask. A person answers at any hour.
Call (267) 392-1418Yes. We're in West Deptford, just across the Delaware from South Philadelphia, and Philadelphia is the main area we serve. We also cover Gloucester, Camden and Burlington counties in New Jersey, and Delaware and Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania.
Yes. Steam and hot-water systems are common in older Philadelphia homes, and we repair the boilers, vents, valves and radiators that go with them. When a steam system bangs, heats unevenly or keeps shutting off, the cause is usually something we can find and fix without replacing the boiler.
Usually, yes. Ductless mini-splits mount on the wall and need only a small hole for the line set. High-velocity systems run small flexible tubing through closets and walls to round outlets. Which one fits depends on the rooms, the attic space and how much equipment you want to see.
Get everyone out of the house first, and don't flip switches or touch the thermostat on the way. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line. Once the utility says it's safe, call us to find which appliance caused it and fix it.
Yes. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day, holidays included. Tell us what's happening and where you are, and we'll set the visit from there.
It depends on the age of the system, what failed and the refrigerant it uses. Older units that run on R-22 are costly to recharge, and the rules for refrigerant in new equipment changed in 2025. We lay out the repair and the replacement side by side so you can compare.
Yes. The water heater usually sits beside the furnace or boiler, so we repair and replace those too, along with dryer vents, bathroom exhaust fans, gas lines, chimney liners, attic insulation, ceiling fans and drywall patches.
Yes. We repair and maintain rooftop units, split systems, walk-in coolers and boilers for restaurants, shops, offices, churches and apartment buildings in Philadelphia and South Jersey.
